How long have you been photographing?

My grandfather gave me a Pentax K1000 in my early teens, along with the Seattle Filmworks Photography School books and audio cassettes. I learned the basics that way, but with film being expensive to develop and having other interests as well at the time I put the camera away for 15 years. During that time I had a few point and shoot cameras, but never felt the same connection to the camera that I had with the K1000 until someone gave me a Nikon D40x a couple of years ago. Having an SLR camera with no shutter lag and good lenses rekindled my interest and I’ve been shooting regularly again since then.

What inspired you to get into photography?

I’ve always be interested in creating things, and photography is another aspect of that. I write software for a living, and I like to have an artistic creative outlet which balances that. When I started shooting portraits about a year and a half ago, I found that the social aspect is also a good contrast for the solitary time I spend in front of the computer most days. The balance of technical, artistic, and social aspects to photography are a perfect mix. I also love the reactions from people when you deliver beautiful photographs of them!

Describe your photography in three words.

Intimate, sexy, dramatic.

What is your favorite lens?

My most used portrait lens by far is my cheap Nikon 50mm 1.8, but I love my 70-200 2.8 for its versatility – it would be really hard to shoot roller derby without it!

What is your favorite camera?

Nikon D300

Where do you get your inspiration from?

Some is from seeing the amazing images other photographers locally and around the world are producing, both the big names and random, unknown photographers on Flickr. I don’t usually have a solid image in mind when I start shooting - I tend to improvise and take inspiration from the model and location for each shoot.

Could you describe the process or idea behind your favorite picture that was in one of our shows?(above)

This one was from my first boudoir shoot. A friend from highschool offered to model for me, so I headed over to her apartment one evening. I’d done a couple of bellydancing shoots for her before, but this was my first attempt at a more intimate shoot. I really like to use high contrast and rim lighting accent shape and texture and I’d seen other similar boudoir shots I liked using diffused light coming in through a sheer curtain. Unfortunately, it was about 9pm and totally dark outside so there was no natural light, but I thought I’d give it a shot with flash. To get this shot I took my SB900 and a medium softbox outside on the porch and used CLS to remotely trigger it through the window.

How long have you been photographing?

I started photographing as a child with the then popular Instamatic cameras using the 110 cartridge film. As a teen, I received my first SLR camera and began to explore more of the photographic possibilities. But it was not until more recently, when I hung up my hat as an Engineer and travelled the world for a few years that I really began photography.

What inspired you to get into photography?

I am fascinated by the world. I am fascinated by light, colour, texture, human interaction and expression. Photography is a medium with which I can capture the beauty that surrounds me and immortalize precious moments in time.

Describe your photography in three words.

Passionate. Creative. Diverse.

What is your favorite lens?

I do not think I have a favourite lens. I like to work with a variety of lenses, depending on what I am shooting. I love the characteristics and possibilities of both telephoto lenses and wide angle lenses. Of course a nice fast 50mm prime is also a pleasure to shoot with. For my travels I prefer to use zooms to allow for that extra flexibility when composing images. My travel bag usually contains the Canon EF 24-105mm and the Canon EF 100-400mm.

What is your favorite camera?

I have been shooting Canon cameras for as long as I can remember. In recent years, I have been upgrading my dSLR bodies more frequently as the technology is advancing. I have been a big fan of the 5D series and am anxiously awaiting the MKIII announcement!

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My inspiration comes from my desire to capture life and the beauty that I perceive and experience. Travel has been a huge contributor to my inspiration on so many levels.

Could you describe the process or idea behind your favorite picture that
was in one of our shows?(above)

It is difficult to pick a favourite image but I would have to say that the image of Yomi Jordan is right at the top. Unlike many of my images that capture a more spontaneous moment in time, this image was created with intention and direction. I used a combination of ambient light, strobe, shutter drag and slight vertical camera movement to create this photo. The combination of light, shadow, movement, curves and position of the models body result in an image with which I am very pleased; an image that exudes a mythical mood.

How long have you been photographing?

Since ever I was handed down my first point and shoot, 11 or 12 maybe? my first proper SLR at age 18 I think, darkroom at 20 and so on. I’m 33, and still a long ways to go in the process!

What inspired you to get into photography?

Every member of my immediate family is a photographer, my father when he was young, my mother, Ute Hagen, is a painter who gains a lot of inspiration from her photos as well as selling them and my brother is a professional stills photographer in Vancouver, Eike Schroter. I held back for many years on seriously pursuing it, and stuck to writing and film, but it’s slowly grabbing a firmer hold on me.

Describe your photography in three words.

balancing emotional atmospheres

What is your favorite lens?

wide or macro, not yet entirely specific. I like a good zoom lens for the ease of jumping near & far.

What is your favorite camera?

I have a digital Canon Rebel Xsi and had the film version as well years ago. I also seriously love my iPhone for its portability (and would do about anything for the new Fuji Finepix!)

Where do you get your inspiration from?

…what’s out there, I don’t often go looking, it surprises me and I’m happy to try to grab the essence, balance the colours, the light and the dark. I enjoy the split seconds between seeing something and the moment you snap, often while driving. A lot of it is about what I try to leave out of a frame and the angles that take you in and back out, I guess that’s what inspires me.

Could you describe the process or idea behind your favorite picture that was in one of our shows?(above)

It was taken from inside a car driving into Paraty, Brazil, on the final night of carnival. There was a frenetic air of expectancy driving in that evening. A gorgeous old colonial town not hesitating to make their last night of the party the best. I have so many travel pictures of places that are so beautiful that all you really need to do is point a camera and it will look stellar based on these other man-made works of art and architecture. It’s often the random human or tree or flash of light that will make a photo special. That’s what really stands out to me about this one, there was no cropping, as it was from my iPhone, it was all about the surprise of human body synchronicity, in colour, form and movement, set against the old city with the light of this relatively new machine, the bus, pushing into frame that spoke to me.

How long have you been photographing?

“I started photographing in 2003 here and there to stave off boredom while living in a then remote area of Surrey. It was with a simple Sony point and shoot that was around at the time, of which some of the pictures from then I still have. I really started to take it seriously in late 2004, when a good friend of mine bought a top of the line point and shoot and began producing some amazing work. At the time I had no camera of my own and borrowed others P&S to go out on city walk abouts with him. I then met a great friend from Japan and she was also interested in photography. So we started to take her camera out almost daily and go off into the city streets and lane ways on 2-3 hour shoots. With her and my other friend I mentioned earlier, we began to collaboratively shoot and exchange pictures via email to critique and in turn slowly improve. I bought my first DSLR (Nikon D50) with the kit lens (18-55) in late 2005 and from there I never looked back.

What inspired you to get into photography?

“I’ve always been interested in captivating images from magazines, especially National Geographic and various music magazines I used to read. I also should say that cd covers from various music, especially the covers from the “Waveform Records” catalogue really inspired me to look at photography as a way to create an inner world or take from the inner world and express it in an image. These inspirations have always been able to build a story in my mind very similar to the way good ambient music can. When I picked up that point and shoot and started to produce some pretty interesting images from somewhere inside myself, I knew then that I wanted to continue with it and find a way to express the images in my own mind more aptly, watching to see how they themselves would develop over time.”

Describe your photography in three words.

“Spontaneous Expression of Self”

What is your favorite lens?

“Since I don’t have a heck of a lot of experience with different lenses mostly due to the financial aspect, I don’t really have much to say to this. However, there are two lenses I want to have and they are the Nikkor 17-55/ 2.8 and some sort of a good macro lens. I’ve yet to delve into that realm of photography yet. Small is interesting.”

What is your favorite camera?

“Well I started out in the realm of Dslrs with a Nikon D50 and now shoot with a D200. For what I do at this point my D200 is already something I will have to grow into in a major way. With that being said, I would probably say the D300 because, well, it’s newer and shiny. I’m a Nikon user for life.”

Where do you get your inspiration?

“All my inspiration now comes from the divine within and is absolutely spontaneous. I can’t force a shot or an image to come. Nor can I try to purposely create an idea or an image. All I can do is let go and just go with the flow. When I start to surrender to the process then things start working out. Of course the pictures my friends of many talents take tend to always blow me away, and also drive me to develop further and go deeper.”

Could you describe the process or idea behind your favorite picture that was in one of our shows?(above)

“The Picture is called “Going to Pieces” and was featured in the “Winter Salon” exhibit. The process is the same as what I described above for inspiration. I saw this piece of rock covered in dry, cracking mud inside a fountain some workers were repairing just off Georgia Street. Immediately the image of a vast, drought stricken lake bed somewhere in the third world popped into my head. So from there I tried to capture that feeling using the subject matter that was available to me at the time. I tried a number of different angles until I got the one that fit. Only after I got it into my computer did I see that the lake bed looked as though it was a piece of land floating in space. Friends said I should have changed the name to “Edge of the Universe”. After some contemplation I decided to forgo a long winded, deep name that would lend itself to that idea, and instead went with a snazzy little number that is a simple, everyday phrase that sounded good to my ears. Sometimes ya just got to go with something that sounds good and rolls off the palette, checking your intellect at the door. Besides, this is art. Intellect has no place here. Just enjoy.”
