Interview: Ed Araquel

Ed Araquel

How long have you been photographing?

“Since 1999″

What inspired you to get into photography?

“Sante D’Orazio’s book, “A Private View”, opened my eyes to what might be possible as a professional photographer.”

Describe your photography in three words.

“No real category”

What is your favorite lens?

“On my Nikon D3, it’s the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8″

What is your favorite camera?

“Right now my favorite camera is the Polaroid 600SE but now that I have a Polaroid back for my Crown Graphic 4×5 large format camera, I’m inching towards that.”

Where do you get your inspiration from?

“Largely from just going out in the world and seeing/feeling/touching/tasting things”

Could you describe the process or idea behind your favorite picture that was in one of our shows?(above)

“I found this custom made three corner hat and leather coat hanging in a store on Hastings called Cabbages and Kinx (which has since burnt down) and I thought I just had to have them to photograph with…I’ve made several pictures now with various models and they’re all totally different despite being the same outfit in each one. Anyway, when my friend Amber tried on the hat and coat, I thought we should put white makeup on her with a beauty mark reminiscent of the 17th century style and then it became this formal portrait which I thought needed to look distressed, old and sepia which I did in Photoshop.”
